Healthy skin is an important indicator of overall health, and as our largest organ it provides an important function of protecting us against the environment. Skin as an organ actually has many functions like temperature regulation, and protection from UV sunlight, injuries, pathogens, microorganisms, and toxins.

Skin provides a significant role of guarding our immunity, sensory touch perception, fluid loss from dehydration, and general homeostasis. Skin is a highly adaptive organ and has the ability to rejuvenate and heal from injury.

Skin Structure

The skin is primarily made up of three layers.

  • Outer layer – epidermis is the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier that provides skin tone and complexion.
  • Mid layer – dermis contains connective tissue, hair follicles, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and sweat glands.
  • Deep layer - hypodermis is made of fat and connective tissue.

    Skin Function

    • It’s an important sensory organ that signals our brains with many types of sensations like pain, temperature, light touch, deep pressure and effortlessly moves with our bodies.
    • Initiates the process of absorbing vitamin D from sunlight which is essential for calcium absorption and normal bone metabolism.
    • Secretes sebum (oil), sweat, and pheromones and has an important immunologic function of secreting substances like cytokines.

      Ayurveda and Skin Health

Ayurveda sees the skin as a major indicator for determining health. Assessing a person’s complexion, undertone color, texture, and compactness is one of the ways an Ayurvedic practitioner determines health. Many people with skin disorders utilize Ayurveda for its skin healing herbs, like khadira, neem, turmeric, guduchi, kutaja, and patola to help the skin heal.
