Indications to Use
Guggulutiktaka Ghritam & Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis with pain in the knee joints is the most common type of arthritis seen in elderly people in particular. Conventional doctors will usually prescribe calcium compounds, but using this treatment it’s not possible to fully get rid of the physical pain. However, a study conducted at L.K. Redekar Ayurveda College and PG Research Centre, showed that Guggulutiktaka Ghritam can have a powerful healing effect on osteoarthritis. The Ashtanga Hridaya also mentions this ghritam as useful in the healing of bone disorders.
In this study done by the L.K. Redekar Ayurveda College, the participants were all between 40 and 80 years of age and diagnosed with osteoarthritis. They were given 20 grams of Guggulutiktaka Ghritam with warm water once a day in the early morning for 45 days. The conclusion of this pilot study stated that this ghritam “is an effective medicine in reduction of pain, swelling, tenderness and restrictions to movements without any noxious effect…” (Patil and Manoj, 2013). This success is because of Guggulutiktaka’s ability to balance Vata Dosha, relieve inflammation, and decrease dhatukshaya, the depletion of body tissues.
