There are many established Ayurvedic Colleges and Universities in the United States offering a variety of programs ranging from one to four years. Over the last few years, several schools have introduced more robust programs and now offer four-year Ayurvedic Doctor Programs. The National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) recognizes three professional levels.
Ayurvedic Health Counselor – 1 Year
Ayurvedic Practitioner – 2 or 3 Years
Ayurvedic Doctor – 4 Years
As the number of school programs increases so are the number of new graduates. Many are eager to practice an unregulated profession. Ayurveda is an unlicensed profession in the United States which does have some challenges. However, many Ayurvedic professionals are also licensed, medical professionals. One common medical license is massage therapy, which allows the practice of most Ayurvedic Body Therapies.
The Ayurvedic profession within the US is rapidly growing and so is the interest in gaining licensure. Licensure is required separately by each state and time will tell the outcome.
