Hemorrhoids are undoubtedly uncomfortable. They quickly manifest causing pain and severe discomfort. Usually, it starts with a simple complaint of constipation or hard stools, and quickly a hemorrhoid can form causing difficulty with defecation. Often there is bleeding and a burning sensation, and overtime too much blood loss will cause fatigue, weight loss and even anemia.

Ayurveda calls hemorrhoids arsha. And there are three types of arsha, which are caused by imbalanced vata, pitta or kapha. Usually, arsha is caused by imbalance in all three dosas, but the predominant dosa determines the type.

Causes of the Three Types of Arsha

  • Arsha caused by vata is from consuming too many foods that are drying, cold and light. Activities that deplete energy, like not eating enough, excess alcohol, frequent, fasting, living in a very dry cold climate, too much exercise and work, exposure to sun and wind and emotions of loss and grief.
  • Arsha caused by pitta stems from too many foods that are hot, spicy, and acidic. Activities that cause excess heat include too much exercise, prolonged exposure to the sun, living in a hot climate, excess alcohol, foods that are too spicy or acidic, emotions of jealousy and anger.
  • Arsha caused by kapha is from consuming too many foods that are sweet, oily, cold, salty, sour, and heavy. Activities that cause heaviness imbalance kapha, including a lack of exercise, sitting too long, sleeping during the day, sleeping too long and exposure to cold, rainy weather.

The three dosas become aggravated by improper diet and lifestyle factors, as we have listed above. The aggravated dosas become lodged and blocked in the anus and put pressure on the blood vessels. The vessels then dilate and cause arsha. If caused by vata and kapha they are known as dry hemorrhoids, which are usually less painful with no bleeding. If caused by pitta, they cause bleeding and are very painful. This is commonly known as wet hemorrhoids.

When managed early on, hemorrhoids are usually not too serious. The best way to avoid painful episodes or even surgery is to maintain a proper diet and lifestyle.

If you are prone to hemorrhoids, it’s best to have Ayurvedic products on hand to administer when symptoms first appear.
