It’s one of the eight branches of classical Ayurveda, specializing in nutrition, immunology and care for the sick and elderly. One of the ways Rasayana enhances immunity is by the use of Lehams (Lehams are sometimes also called Rasayanas). Lehams are herbal jams made from fresh fruit and herbs combined with honey, ghee, sesame and sugar. Delicious as well as nutritious!
Lehams rejuvenate the body at the cellular level and enhances ojas (strength and immunity) through its nutrient-dense ingredients; while at the same time Lehams promote healthy digestion and a strong metabolism. These special herbal products are known for three actions that improve longevity and quality of life:
Most Ayurvedic practitioners will recommend a purification process before Rasayana therapy is recommended. The purification process includes dietary cleansing with foods and spices based on your imbalance and prepares the body for rejuvenation. Even people who are weak or sick are advised to first improve digestion first before taking a Leham.
The best Rasayana therapy regimens are overseen by an Ayurvedic practitioner who can fully understand your state of health and offer you the best care!
Haritaki and Amalaki are two key herbs included with most Rasayana therapies. They are considered like nectar and have very similar actions (except Haritaki is warming and Amalaki is cooling). Both Lehams move impurities through and out of the body, improve bodily functions and balance metabolism.
AGASTYA RASAYANA is an excellent choice for upper respiratory conditions. The key herb is Haritaki. This Leham is useful in the prevention of and to support the healing of colds and the flu, chronic sinus allergies, sinus infections and fevers, chronic cough, bronchitis and asthma.
Many asthma patients who turned to Ayurveda are familiar with Agastya Rasayanam. This healing product contains honey, ghee, sesame, sugar and many herbs like Bala, Dasamula, Barley and Chitraka.
BRAHMA RASAYANAM is one of the most potent Lehams because it contains both Haritaki and Amalaki. Made from 3,000 Amalaki fruits and 1,000 Haritaki fruits, it enhances mental strength, cognition and memory. The Ashtanga Hridayam one of three early Ayurvedic texts, states this Rasayana reduces lethargy, fatigue, promotes good health well into old age and reduces gray hair.
CHYAVANAPRASAM is one of the most well-known and highly nutritious Lehams made primarily from Amalaki, which is rich in Vitamin C. It’s an immunomodulator, which helps to prevent disease, strengthen the overall body and improve fertility.
Chyavanaprasam was first recorded in the Caraka Samhita, the earlies ancient Ayurvedic text from the first millennium BCE. The most delightful aspect is the taste! It is sweet, sour and spicy all at the same time. The long list of ingredients includes honey, sesame, ghee, sugar and many different herbs.
DASAMULAHARITAKI LEHAM combines the benefits of Haritaki and Dasamula. Dasamula contains ten different roots. Ayurvedic practitioners often use it to help treat liver and respiratory disorders, hypertension, inflammation, chronic fevers and chronic fatigue and weakness.
NARASIMHA RASAYANAM is made mostly from ghee, as well as Haritaki and milk. This Leham is particularly useful for anti-aging, loss of libido, loss of hair and premature graying. It also improves digestion and weight gain where needed. Narasimha Rasayanam can be used to prepare for Pañcakarma in an Ayurvedic treatment called Snehakarma as well.
VIDARYADI LEHAM is made from five herbal roots shalaparni, brihati, prishiparni, kanthakari, and gokshura. Vidaryadi builds the body’s tissues and manages chronic cardio-pulmonary disorders, chronic muscle cramps and emaciation.

The end of the year marks the time when many families celebrate their most important holiday. And it’s also the time when stress is at its highest level and we tend to neglect our healthy daily routine. The combined stress along with heavier holiday meals and the cold wet kapha season sets the stage for kapha to increase and reduce our energy and immunity.
