In Ayurveda, all skin disorders are grouped under a broad heading of kushta (skin disorders). Kshudra kushta, which literally means minor skin disorder, is most similar to psoriasis. Although we know psoriasis is not a minor disorder for those experiencing it!
Here’s how Ayurveda can help: the Ayurvedic approach to all skin disorders is to eat a healthy diet for your constitution, first and foremost. This means avoiding foods that are unhealthy for the persons primary dosa or body type and focusing on healthy foods specifically for you. (An Ayurvedic practitioner can help you identify those.)
Prolonged consumption of unhealthy or incompatible foods can provoke the dosas to increase out of balance—and digestion is greatly affected. The key word here is prolonged, which we describe as “excessive”. That looks different for everyone, but it’s generally when you eat too much of it, too often, versus just once in a while.
Here are some of the foods and habits known to cause digestive upset that lead to skin disorders like psoriasis:
The above factors can imbalance all three dosas, especially vata and kapha! The dosa becomes imbalanced during digestion. Then the lymphatic fluid, blood, muscle, and skin become affected, which leads to skin lesions manifesting in various parts of the body.
